Sophie The Survivor

I recently read an article about an amazing Australian cattle dog named Sophie, who, after falling off her family's boat, survived for four months on a deserted island!

In November, Jan and David Giffith took out their boat for what was to be a nice day at sea, but that day turned into anything but! The weather turned bad and the water became very rough. While they struggled to steer the boat through the rough waters, Sophie fell overboard. By the time they had realized what happen, Sophie was nowhere to be seen. They searched the rest of that day and the next for their beloved pup, but were unable to find her and had to return home. After a few months had passed, their kids gave them a new dog, but they still deeply missed Sophie.

What the Griffiths didn't know was that, after falling off the boat, Sophie swam for more then five miles and ended up on a large deserted island called St. Bees. There she caught her own food and survived off of shellfish, lizards and at least one baby goat! Instincts to survive are extraodinary! It wasn't until four months had passed that she was finally discovered. During a routine check of the island she was found and caught by Park rangers and reunited with her family. The Griffith's say she is the same dog she was before. What a relief to finally have her back, safe and sound!
