Harnesses vs. Collars: The Importance of a Harness for Small Breeds
For smaller breeds, as well as those breeds prone to back problems, harnesses are a safer alternative to a collar. A harness pulls mostly from the chest area, which can save your dog’s back and neck from the trauma that can be caused by yanking on a collar, which pulls from around your baby’s neck. In addition to back problems, collars can damage the trachea (windpipe) and larynx (voice box) of small breeds, especially Chihuahuas! Vets highly recommend avoiding use of a collar on smaller breeds to prevent serious tracheal and back problems due to their delicate bodies.
Harnesses can also come in handy in an emergency situation! If you need to grab your dog as quickly as possible, you can lift your little one by the harness, directly from the leash, to bring your baby up into your arms with one swift movement. This can come in handy, for example, if another dog attempts to attack your little one. You can get him or her out of harms way quickly. There is no way you could do that with a collar or else you would choke your pup, and we both know you don’t want to do that!!!
